Courses at Matt Smith Ceramics take place in our friendly and laid-back studio at Charlton Barns near Chichester in West Sussex with our guest pottery specialists .

We pride ourselves on being a collaborative studio, filled with friendly faces and supportive, like-minded creators of all abilities. Tools will be provided, but please bring an apron or old overshirt; pottery can be a messy business!

  • An Introduction to Porcelain Course

    Wednesday 4th of March 10.00 - 4.00pm & Friday 6th of March 9.00 - 1.00pm

    The beauty and simplicity of porcelain has to be experienced first hand to be understood.

    It is such a sensorial and luxe process to create with this clay. Although is has a reputation of being tricky to throw, it is actually a matter of understanding the differences of this clay from the other clays.

    In this course Deborah will demystify the art of working with porcelain and guide you through -

    Basic techniques of preparing the clay

    - Throwing a cylinder

    - How to create beautiful forms

    - Turning and refining your work

    **To attend this course you need to have some throwing experience.

    The cost of this course includes all materials and firings. Please bring an apron.

  • From Earth to Oven

    Throwing Functional Casseroles and Tagines for slow cooking.

    Wednesday 26th of November 10.30 - 3.00

    Celebrate the harmony of form and function in this immersive throwing course dedicated to creating beautiful, casserole pots, hot pots and tagines on the wheel. Designed for potters who want to deepen their technical skills and refine their craftsmanship, this course focuses entirely on throwing ovenware - timeless pieces that bring both design and utility to the dining table.

    Throwing bases and lids: How to throw matching parts that fit seamlessly, exploring gallery, flange, and different styles of lids.

    Proportion and design: Measuring clay and throwing to scale so that you understand the visual and functional balance between lid and body.

    Tagine forms: Throwing and shaping the distinctive conical lids of Moroccan tagines, with attention to airflow and how they perform.

    Refining the fit: Trimming, finishing, and testing lid alignment for a professional finish.

    Ergonomic details: Creating handles, knobs, and rims that function beautifully in use as well as look right.

    The cost of this course includes all materials and firings. Please bring an apron and a towel.
